As unbreakable as ... glass?

My first response when I saw images from the glass boxes of the Sears Tower was, "Wow, I would still be able to see the magnificent view below through the puddle of vomit at my feet!"

After the nausea fades, I have to admit, such a feat seems utterly amazing to me.

This article by Henry Fountain, published in the NY Times on July 6th, explains how the engineers built such a structure (four of them!), and the link also provides other links with interesting info about building with glass.

I doubt I would ever be courageous enough to step out onto such a platform, but one day, entire buildings may be made of glass without the perceived safety of steel fittings.
