I don't like moths. It may be due to my strange fascination with Godzilla movies as a child. The idea of a giant moth carrying twin sirens around was very freaky. I also remember an episode of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" about a moth collector's collection that came to life and then pinned HIM to a board. Very spooky stuff.Certainly my dislike of moths drew me to this MSNBC article. Or it may be that my favorite color is pink, and how in the world did my favorite color appear on an insect I find so particularly distasteful?
The moth is confirmed by DNA testing to be a new species and is named Lithophane leeae, after the discoverer and biologist Bruce Walsh's wife, Lee. The photo is by Bruce Walsh (University of Arizona).
